Power Quality in Electrical Machines and Power Systems

Power Quality in Electrical Machines and Power Systems

520 pages | Academic Press (February 15, 2008) | ISBN: 0123695368 | PDF | 43 Mb

Power Quality of power systems affects all connected electrical and electronic equipment. Power Quality is a measure of deviations in voltage and frequency of the particular supply system. In recent years, there has been a considerable increase in nonlinear loads; in particular distributed loads, such as computers, TV monitors and lighting. These draw harmonic currents which, when distorted, have detrimental effects including interference, loss of reliability, increased operating costs, equipment overheating, motor failures, capacitor failure and inaccurate power metering. This subject is pertinent to engineers involved with electric power systems, electronic equipment, computers and manufacturing equipment. This book shows readers to understand the causes and effects of power quality problems such as non-sinusoidal wave shapes, voltage outages, losses due to poor power quality, origins of single-time events such as voltage dips, voltage reductions, and outages, along with techniques to mitigate these problems.
. Provides theoretical and practical insight into power quality problems of machines and systems
. Problems/solutions at the end of each chapter dealing with practical applications
. Includes application examples including SPICE, Mathematica, and MATLAB examples

Defect-Oriented Testing for Nano-Metric CMOS VLSI Circuits,2 Edition

Manoj Sachdev, José Pineda de Gyvez, "Defect-Oriented Testing for Nano-Metric CMOS VLSI Circuits,2 Edition"
Springer | 2007 | ISBN: 0387465464 | 328 pages | File type: PDF | 5,5 mb

Failures of nano-metric technologies owing to defects and shrinking process tolerances give rise to significant challenges for IC testing. As the variation of fundamental parameters such as channel length, threshold voltage, thin oxide thickness and interconnect dimensions goes well beyond acceptable limits, new test methodologies and a deeper insight into the physics of defect-fault mappings are needed. In Defect-Oriented Testing for Nano-Metric CMOS VLSI Circuits state of the art of defect-oriented testing is presented from both a theoretical approach as well as from a practical point of view. Step-by-step handling of defect modeling, defect-oriented testing, yield modeling and its usage in common economics practices enables deeper understanding of concepts.

The progression developed in this book is essential to understand new test methodologies, algorithms and industrial practices. Without the insight into the physics of nano-metric technologies, it would be hard to develop system-level test strategies that yield a high IC fault coverage. Obviously, the work on defect-oriented testing presented in the book is not final, and it is an evolving field with interesting challenges imposed by the ever-changing nature of nano-metric technologies. Test and design practitioners from academia and industry will find that Defect-Oriented Testing for Nano-Metric CMOS VLSI Circuits lays the foundations for further pioneering work.

All-Digital Frequency Synthesizer in Deep-Submicron CMOS

Robert B. Staszewski, Poras T. Balsara, "All-Digital Frequency Synthesizer in Deep-Submicron CMOS"
Wiley-Interscience | 2006 | ISBN: 0471772550 | 261 pages | File type: PDF | 7,8 mb

A new and innovative paradigm for RF frequency synthesis and wireless transmitter design

Learn the techniques for designing and implementing an all-digital RF frequency synthesizer. In contrast to traditional RF techniques, this innovative book sets forth digitally intensive design techniques that lead the way to the development of low-cost, low-power, and highly integrated circuits for RF functions in deep submicron CMOS processes. Furthermore, the authors demonstrate how the architecture enables readers to integrate an RF front-end with the digital back-end onto a single silicon die using standard ASIC design flow.

Taking a bottom-up approach that progressively builds skills and knowledge, the book begins with an introduction to basic concepts of frequency synthesis and then guides the reader through an all-digital RF frequency synthesizer design:

* Chapter 2 presents a digitally controlled oscillator (DCO), which is the foundation of a novel architecture, and introduces a time-domain model used for analysis and VHDL simulation
* Chapter 3 adds a hierarchical layer of arithmetic abstraction to the DCO that makes it easier to operate algorithmically
* Chapter 4 builds a phase correction mechanism around the DCO such that the system's frequency drift or wander performance matches that of the stable external frequency reference
* Chapter 5 presents an application of the all-digital RF synthesizer
* Chapter 6 describes the behavioral modeling and simulation methodology used in design

The final chapter presents the implementation of a full transmitter and experimental results. The novel ideas presented here have been implemented and proven in two high-volume, commercial single-chip radios developed at Texas Instruments: Bluetooth and GSM.

While the focus of the book is on RF frequency synthesizer design, the techniques can be applied to the design of other digitally assisted analog circuits as well. This book is a must-read for students and engineers who want to learn a new paradigm for RF frequency synthesis and wireless transmitter design using digitally intensive design techniques.

Mathematical Foundations of Neuroscience

Mathematical Foundations of Neuroscience
Mathematical Foundations of Neuroscience
Publisher: Springer | 2010 | PDF | 422 pages | ISBN: 038787707X | 6.1Mb

This book is motivated by a perceived need for an overview of how dynamical systems and computational analysis have been used in understanding the types of models that come out of neuroscience. The book arose out of several courses that the authors have taught including a graduate course in computational neuroscience with students from psychology, mathematics, computer science, physics and neuroscience backgrounds.

The book begins with bio-physics of the cell membrane and from this introduces compartmental models, continuum limits and cable theory and active ion channels. Prior to the work on active channels, all equations are linear and in theory completely solvable in closed form.

The Black Art of Xbox Mods

Jonathan Harbour, «The Black Art of Xbox Mods»
Sams Publishing | ISBN: 0672326833 | 2004 | File type: PDF | 336 pages | 13.43 mb

The Xbox might be described as a powerful, proprietary PC that has been customized exclusively for running games. This book will help you to maximize the potential of your Xbox video game console by showing you how to modify your Xbox in various ways.

You will learn how to disassemble your Xbox, right down to the motherboard, and you will learn about each component inside the Xbox case. Several chapters are devoted to the most important part of Xbox modding: choosing a mod chip and then learning how to install it in your Xbox. The mod chip allows you to run third-party software on your Xbox that is normally limited exclusively to licensed retail games. By being able to run custom software on your Xbox, you will be able to transform it into a powerful media center capable of playing music files (such as MP3) and video files (such as MPEG2, Divx, WMV, and Xvid). All of the Xbox mod chips currently available work on the same principles, so you will find the coverage of the material applicable to whatever mod chip you use (or plan to install while reading this book). Although this book addresses several of the major mod chips currently available, it focuses primarily on the Xenium mod chip. I chose this mod chip because it comes with an excellent operating system with features that will assist with upgrading the hard drive and installing your favorite Dashboards and software. All of the mod chips currently on the market are similar, so even if you're using another mod chip (such as SmartXX, Xecuter, X-Bit, X-Chip, or Chameleon), you will find the topics relevant and helpful because the focus is mainly on the Xbox itself, not on any specific model of aftermarket hardware.

Gerald R. Rising, "Inside Your Calculator: From Simple Programs to Significant Insights" Wiley-Interscience | 2007-07-16 | ISBN:0470114010 | 304 pages | File type: PDF | 1,4 mb Many of us want to understand how the technological instruments that so pervade modern society operate. This book answers questions about one of those devices: the scientific calculator. Calculator keys seem to work like magic. They tell us, for example, that the cosine of 56° is 0.559192903. This book explores the simple internal calculator processes (called algorithms or programs) that produce this and similar results. Although the text focuses on the calculator keys that compute powers, roots, logarithms, and trigonometry functions, insights are also provided into simple programming, conversion between decimal and binary numeration, and perhaps most important, the structure of our numeration systems. Many people think that the processes that drive calculators demand advanced mathematical concepts such as Taylor series. However, high school algebra and a minimum understanding of programming (provided by this text) supply enough background to understand these algorithms. http://depositfiles.com/files/7gc8chne5 http://www.sharingmatrix.com/file/14821375/Inside_Your_Calculator.pdf

Alan Wiemann, "Standardized Functional Verification"

Alan Wiemann, "Standardized Functional Verification"
Springer; 1 edition (September 14, 2007) | ISBN: 0387717323 | 296 pages | File type: PDF | 6 mb

Standardized Functional Verification describes the science of functional verification that applies to any digital hardware system. With a precise and comprehensive terminology this book describes a thorough technical framework for achieving superior results with greater efficiency. It also defines a scientific basis for achieving functional closure and shows how true functional closure can be measured by software.

The author provides a wealth of practical guidance to the practicing professional. It describes how to compare results from differing projects and how to assess the risk of functional bugs at tape-out or at any other critical product juncture. The book also shows consumers how to compare IP offerings from multiple vendors. For producers, it describes how to verify IP in a manner that meets customer needs. Producers and consumers of silicon IP therefore have a solid framework to communicate requirements and to align expectations effectively and efficiently.

Standardized Functional Verification is a valuable reference for verification engineers and managers, and also for developers of verification software. The principles and theory this book describes will drive creation of the next generation of verification tools.

Mathematical Modeling of Collective Behavior in Socio-Economic and Life Sciences

Mathematical Modeling of Collective Behavior in Socio-Economic and Life Sciences
Mathematical Modeling of Collective Behavior in Socio-Economic and Life Sciences
Publisher: Birkhäuser Boston | 2010 | PDF | 435 pages | ISBN: 081764945X | 8.6Mb

Mathematical modeling using dynamical systems and partial differential equations is now playing an increasing role in the understanding of complex multi-scale phenomena. Behavior in seemingly different areas such as sociology, economics, and the life sciences can be described by closely related models. Systems made out of a large enough number of individual members can be said to exhibit a collective behavior, from which insight can be gathered in a way that real life experiments cannot.

Using examples from financial markets and modern warfare to the flocking of birds and the swarming of bacteria, the collected research in this volume demonstrates the common methodological approaches and tools for modeling and simulating collective behavior.

Specific topics covered include: analysis of wealth distributions, dynamics of price formation, spreading of opinions, models of social behavior, population dynamics, and aggregation and swarming.

The topics presented point toward new and challenging frontiers of applied mathematics, making the volume a useful reference text for applied mathematicians, physicists, biologists, and economists involved in the modeling of socio-economic systems.

Measuring Efficiency in Health Care: Analytic Techniques and Health Policy
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521851440 | edition 2006 | PDF | 262 pages | 12 mb

With the healthcare sector accounting for a sizeable proportion of national expenditures, the pursuit of efficiency has become a central objective of policymakers within most health systems. However, the analysis and measurement of efficiency is a complex undertaking, not least due to the multiple objectives of health care organizations and the many gaps in information systems. In response to this complexity, research in organizational efficiency analysis has flourished. This book examines some of the most important techniques currently available to measure the efficiency of systems and organizations, including data envelopment analysis and stochastic frontier analysis, and also presents some promising new methodological approaches.

Such techniques offer the prospect of many new and fruitful insights into health care performance. Nevertheless, they also pose many practical and methodological challenges. This is a timely critical assessment of the strengths and limitations of efficiency analysis applied to health and health care.

Ultra-Low Energy Domain-Specific Instruction-Set Processors

Francky Catthoor, Praveen Raghavan, Andy Lambrechts, Murali Jayapala, Angeliki Kritikakou, Javed Absar, "Ultra-Low Energy Domain-Specific Instruction-Set Processors"
Springer | 2010 | ISBN: 9048195276 | 400 pages | File type: PDF | 3,6 mb

Modern consumers carry many electronic devices, like a mobile phone, digital camera, GPS, PDA and an MP3 player. The functionality of each of these devices has gone through an important evolution over recent years, with a steep increase in both the number of features as in the quality of the services that they provide. However, providing the required compute power to support (an uncompromised combination of) all this functionality is highly non-trivial. Designing processors that meet the demanding requirements of future mobile devices requires the optimization of the embedded system in general and of the embedded processors
in particular, as they should strike the correct balance between flexibility, energy efficiency and performance. In general, a designer will try to minimize the energy consumption (as far as needed) for a given performance, with a sufficient flexibility. However, achieving this goal is already complex when looking at the processor in isolation, but, in reality, the processor is a single component in a more complex system. In order to design such complex system successfully, critical decisions during the design of each individual component should take into account effect on the other parts, with a clear goal to move to a global Pareto optimum in the complete multi-dimensional exploration space.

In the complex, global design of battery-operated embedded systems, the focus of Ultra-Low Energy Domain-Specific Instruction-Set Processors is on the energy-aware architecture exploration of domain-specific instruction-set processors and the co-optimization of the datapath architecture, foreground memory, and instruction memory organisation with a link to the required mapping techniques or compiler steps at the early stages of the design. By performing an extensive energy breakdown experiment for a complete embedded platform, both energy and performance bottlenecks have been identified, together with the important relations between the different components. Based on this knowledge, architecture extensions are proposed for all the bottlenecks.
